What Do We Know About the Skoda Karoq 2018 to Date

White Karoq 2018

The Positioning

The Skoda Karoq 2018 is set to be competition for its cousin the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai Tucson. It is essentially a smaller sibling to the Kodiaq that was launched last year. The Kodiaq and Karoq share the MQB platform that is also used for other models in the Volkswagen Group.According to Skoda Australia, general manager of corporate communications, Paul Pottinger, the local division is aiming for a competitive entry point that also provides a comprehensive level of specification as standard. He said that the Karoq will continue the values of Skoda to offer ownership benefits “beyond the price tag” with inherent value and “exceptionally” well equipped spec list.Essentially, the Karoq is a smaller, five seat Kodiaq, so a diesel 4×4 Karoq would comfortably sit beneath the entry level Kodiaq.

Powertrains

Based on Mr. Pottinger’s comments, it is likely that the Karoq will have two powertrain options at launch. This is anticipated to be a front wheel drive, turbo petrol as a base and an all wheel drive, turbo diesel top spec. Many auto experts are suggesting that the petrol will be the 1.5 litre 110kW unit currently offered in Europe. The flagship diesel is thought to be a 2.0 litre unit, but overseas, there is currently two variants in this engine size; a 110kW and 140kW.The European petrol model also features active cylinder deactivation, so that two of the four cylinders can be shut off to minimise cruising fuel consumption. Additionally, overseas, the 140kW diesel is only offered with all wheel drive as standard. Other variants have this engine as an option, which hints to this engine being the more powerful top spec model referred to by Mr. Pottinger.

Features

The 2018 Skoda Karoq for sale is also set to provide the debut for the brand’s fully digital instrument cluster. This follows Volkswagen’s Active Info and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit displays, but the Skoda version is likely to have its own character. The Karoq technology is likely to roll out across other model ranges, so it is a good indicator of the future features of the Skoda lineup.
